Year 5

Our PE days for this half term are Wednesday afternoons with Premier PE and Thursday afternoons at Swim Stars in Bawtry.  Please ensure indoor and swim kit are brought to school on these days.

• Reading at least 3 times per week recorded in reading records, as these are checked regularly.

• Recall maths to be practised weekly.

• Reflex to be practised weekly to increase fluency,

• Spellings sent out fortnightly for practise.

This year we will be reading the books below. These texts have been chosen to support and the develop reading skills required to understand texts and to inspire a love of reading.

During the start of our Autumn term the class will read 'Skellig' by David Almond. The story follows Michael, a young boy who has just moved into a dilapidated house. Michael is faced with many worries and challenges, that are made more complicated with the discovery of a mysterious man in his derelict garage - if he is a man that is. With the help of his strange neighbour, Mina, Michael goes on a journey to help heal the mysterious man, and in the process discover the mysteries of the world he lives in. The children will be examining themes of nature, the power of empathy and the mystery life holds. 

After we have finished our immersive unit of Skellig, we will begin reading Queen of the Falls by Chris Van Allsburg. Queen of the Falls is about a 62-year-old woman named Annie Edson Taylor who remembers getting closer and closer to Niagara Falls with her father, entranced by the sight and sound of the water. Finally, as a 62-year-old, she goes over the falls in a wooden barrel, seeking fortune and fame.

For our Spring term we will be looking at The Darkest Dark. It is a story about a boy called Chris who loves rockets and planets and pretending he’s a brave astronaut, exploring the universe. Only one problem–at night, Chris doesn’t feel so brave. He’s afraid of the dark. But when he watches the ground-breaking moon landing on TV, he realizes that space is the darkest dark there is–and the dark is beautiful and exciting, especially when you have big dreams to keep you company.

In our last term for the Summer, we will be reading the Radiant Child. Radiant Child: The Story of Young Artist Jean-Michel Basquiat is a 2016 picture book biography by Javaka Steptoe about Jean-Michel Basquiat. Using a style similar to Basquiat's, the book tells the story of his childhood and early career.

As a Church of England school each class participates in at least one hour of Religious Education each week alongside daily worship, either as a whole school or as a class.

During the Autumn term in Year 5 the children will be building on knowledge they have acquired in previous key stages. To begin, children will examine the question, "What does it mean to be loving and holy?". They will push their understanding of how Christians practice their faith by embodying the these values into their day to day lives. Children explore scripture and stories from the Bible to support them to understand the Christian belief and the importance of love and forgiveness. 

As part of Spring term the children in Year 5 will take part in Messy church to celebrate the love of God. In lessons, they will learn more about Salvation and how Jesus sacrificed himself for others. Children will also learn about the Judaism and to answer the big question about Jews relationship to the Torah. Children will have opportunities to explore artefacts and make comparisons to that of the Christian belief.

Year 5 science covers all areas of scientific understanding. The children will begin their Autumn term looking at the physics unit of 'forces'. The children will be involved with experiments that will push their understanding of how forces effect everything. They will learn further about gravity, but will build on their prior knowledge with experiments with air resistance, water resistance and friction. They will be give a wide range of opportunities to put their hypotheses to work by being real scientists conducting experiments.

The children will cover biology with looking at the life cycle of plants and animals, more physics with space, which will tie in well with their reading and writing units, as well as looking at materials and their properties (chemistry).

In Autumn term, the children will be studying Medieval Britain with specific links to the local area. They will learn how to use a variety of sources to support them to understand how the Romans leaving Britain lead to the Dark Ages. The children will learn how William the Conqueror built several castle to fortify settlements up to York, but how this was not supported by everyone in England which lead to the Harrying of the North. Children will visit Conisborough Castle to support their understanding of the castles built by the Normans. The children will use the Domesday Book as a key piece of evidence to find out about settlements, occupants and livestock which made up Medieval Britain. Children will find out about Finningley and other local villages such as Armthorpe and Auckley which are all mentioned in the Domesday Book. In Spring, the children will also look at Ancient Greeks, from how they ruled, what they believed and the legacy they left on the world. The children will apply their historical oracy skills to work in debating in the style of Socrates and explaining why a broken piece of pottery can reveal so much to them. 

They will finish their time in Year 5 by researching the Tudors. A notoriously complicated family who still inspire us today. The children will be comparing data and discoveries to understand how life worked over 500 years ago. They will take on the roles of people from different classes to truly feel how life could be like for a Lord versus a poor widow. There will also be mention of King Henry and his many, many wives.

In Autumn term, we will be learning about 'Our Local area'. The children will use Digimaps to understand 6 figure grid references and how to use these accurately with maps. They will apply this knowledge to their local area and being accurate in placing landmarks of Finningley.

In Spring term, our geography work looks at 'Our connected world'. The children will build on their previous knowledge of the equator to the other lines that make up our globe. The children will see how trade links, cartography and climate connects us all on planet earth. 

Summer term will have the children looking at 'Our Blue planet'. This unit will link previous work in science (States of Matter: The Water Cycle, Year 4) and geography, identifying the range of bodies of water on our planet and their physical and human features. Children will then research changes to these water bodies and the impact it has had on local and global climates, and how we can conserve our world.

During the Autumn term, the children will be learning fitness, hockey, gymnastic and dance. In hockey, the children will build on their team work skills, their hand-eye coordination and control over the ball and their understanding of the rules of hockey.

For fitness, the children will build on their stamina, the coordination and their flexibility.

For dance and gymnastics, the children will develop their creativity with their move choices, their balance and coordination and their team working skills. 

In the Spring term, the children will have their swimming block. They will attend Swim Stars in Bawtry and be taught key life saving skills, as well as perfecting their technique by the swim instructors.

Premier PE will also be leading PE for Spring term. The children will be able to take part in fencing.

Summer term, the children will be focusing on rounders and athletics.

In Autumn term, we will be learning how to use our Chromebooks access Purple mash. Here the children will create their own games, build on their understanding of data and how to use it, as well as other computer literacy skills.

In Autumn term, we will be learning about the artist Van Gogh. They will make observations about his work and practise techniques similar to those used by the artist. The children will use their knowledge to recreate their own interpretation of Van Gogh's 'Starry Night'.

During Spring term, the focus of study will be on the Northern artist L.S Lowry. The children will be using a new skill, perspective, to create their own Lowry-esq art work. They will be building on their previous skills of drawing and tone to progress.

Summer term will allow for opportunities to explore different styles of sculpture such as carving, wire and papier mache and salt dough.  Children will practice each technique before deciding which technique they prefer and to use as part of their final piece. Artists Antony Gormley and Salvador Dali will be studied.

In Autumn term, we will be learning about mechanisms and gears. Children will investigate, analyse and explore existing everyday objects that incorporate a mechanism. The children will apply their research of toys to design and create their own.

Spring term will allow the children to develop their design skills when creating 'vegetable scones'. Children will endeavour to meet the design brief to ensure the product they make is fit for the person and for its purpose. They will investigate, analyse and explore existing savoury scones and research historical events or important people linked to the product or its purpose. Children will take part in market research to inform their designs which they will draw as exploded diagrams.

Throughout Summer term children will be learning about permanent and portable frame structures such as tents, umbrellas and bus shelters. Children will endeavour to meet the design brief to ensure the product they make is fit for the person and for its purpose. They will investigate, analyse and explore existing structures and important people linked to structures such as Thomas Farnolls, the designer of iron bridge. The children will practice small step skills need to create their design and they will evaluate their final pieces against the design brief.
