F1 - Nursery

Monthly home learning challenges are set via Class Dojo for activities linked to our learning in school that you can do at home to support your child's understanding. You can send these back to school by attaching a photo or video and a comment to your child's Class Dojo portfolio.

In F1 we try to foster a love of reading for pleasure. It is really helpful if you can read stories regularly with your child. Have a look at the document attached for some pointers on supporting early reading skills.

It is really helpful if children can begin to have a try at self-care routines before starting Nursery. Of course, staff are always on hand to help, but if your child is already familiar with having a try at these things themselves it is a really big help. It also gives them more confidence in the classroom and allows them to get on with their day without having to wait for someone to help.

Here are some things that you could encourage independence with at home:

• putting on their coat (at school we encourage the 'hoods on first' method as shown to the right for children who cannot yet put their coat on independently)

• doing up their own zip

• going to the toilet

• washing their hands

• eating with a knife and fork

• drinking from a cup

EYFS Recommended Reading List

Learning to Read in F1

Our theme this half term is 'Tell me a story'.

Our core texts are The Gingerbread Man and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We will be learning about the stories and exploring lots of vocabulary.

This term in Maths we will be recognising numbers 3, 4 and 5. This includes subitising them, showing them on our fingers, looking at the composition of them etc. We will also be identifying some 2D shapes and sorting objects by size.

We will be developing our listening skills and ability to discriminate between sounds.

We will be exploring environmental sounds, instrumental sounds, body percussion, voice sounds, rhythm and rhyme, alliteration and oral segmenting and blending.

We will also begin introducing some sounds from RWI when the children are ready.

The Foundations Of:

RE – This half term we are using NATRE- National Association of Teachers of Religious Education, to look at what makes us special. Our key question is "Where do we belong?".

History – We will be talking about what came before us. We will be focusing on the distant past and looking at dinosaurs.  

Geography – We will be talking about where we live and where our school is and comparing the village to the city of Doncaster. 

Science – We will be talking about the weather and exploring seasonal weather changes that occur in Winter. 

Computing – We will be following and giving instructions. 

The Foundations Of:

PSHE - Relationships: Keeping Friendships Healthy. We will be talking about what makes a good friend and talking about why we like our friends. We will also begin to discuss giving others personal space.

The Foundations Of:

Music - Charanga: Happy Talk. The children will be learning to sing whole songs and respond to musical messages and changes.   

Art - Drawing. We will be exploring the work of Gerhard Richter and Wassily Kandinsky. We will be exploring drawing lines and shapes inspired by these artists. 

We will also be practising our scissor skills.

We will be developing our gross and fine motor skills through activities such as dough disco and squiggle while you wiggle. 

We will also be using our outdoor area to develop our gross motor skills. The children love to practice their running, moving, climbing and throwing skills and have access to our outdoor area every day to practice these. Children should come dressed appropriately to play outside every day in all weathers.

In F1 we go out in any weather so please make sure your children are dressed appropriately. We suggest your child has a puddlesuit and wellies in school to keep in their drawer. 

We send home a book to encourage reading for pleasure each week. This book will be changed every Friday so please ensure their books are in their bags on this day.

When the children have settled into F1 we will hopefully be going down to Forest School one day a week. Further information will be released about this at a later date.
